Dump truck folks are some of the hardest working people I insure. You’re hauling gravel, dirt, sand, asphalt or demo, a lot of times on short runs, in and out of job sites all day long. And so your insurance needs to fit the way you actually run, not some cookie-cutter policy written for an over-the-road van.
Coverage for dump trucks
- Primary auto liability — covers injury and damage you cause to others, at the limits your contracts and job sites ask for.
- Physical damage — protects your truck and trailer from a wreck, theft, fire or a storm.
- General liability — important when you’re working on job sites, dumping and spreading, not just driving down the road.
- Cargo — some dump work needs it and some doesn’t. We’ll tell you plainly which one you are.
What drives the price on dump truck insurance
Your radius, what you haul, your driving records, your years in business and what your trucks are worth all play into it. Local sand and gravel work rates different from long hauls. And so when we shop it with A-rated carriers, we make sure they see your operation the right way.
Watch your minimum and audit premiums
Let me give you a real life example. I saw a policy rated on a lot more business than the client actually did, with a minimum premium nobody ever explained to her. When the audit came around, she lost out on a big refund she should have gotten. So this is very important. If your policy is rated on mileage or revenue, your agent needs to explain the minimum and the audit up front. That’s why your agent needs to be working for you, and not just looking out for the insurance company.
Let’s look at yours
Every operation is different, and I’m not going to throw a number at you before I know your trucks, your drivers and what you haul. Give me a call on my cell at 205-275-5005, or start a quote with your DOT number and we’ll get to work on it.
