Small and mid-size fleets sit in a tough spot: too big to be treated like a single truck, too small to have a risk manager on staff. Transportation Risk Specialists works with fleets of roughly 2 to 50 power units to build a complete insurance program, shop it with A-rated carriers, and keep it current as trucks and drivers come and go.

Coverage for a growing fleet
- Primary auto liability — Meets FMCSA’s financial responsibility requirements for your authority and the limits your contracts require.
- Motor truck cargo — Written to fit the commodities you haul and the limits your brokers and shippers ask for.
- Physical damage — For every scheduled tractor and trailer, with deductibles that fit your cash flow.
- Workers’ compensation — For your employee drivers and staff, following the rules of the states where you operate.
- General liability — For your yard, shop, and premises exposures.
- Trailer interchange and non-owned trailer coverage — When you pull trailers owned by others.
- Umbrella or excess liability — For contracts that require limits above your primary policy.
- Non-trucking liability — For leased-on owner-operators, if your fleet uses them.
What matters most for fleet insurance
Your drivers
Driver selection is one of the biggest things underwriters look at for a fleet. Expect questions about hiring standards, motor vehicle record checks, CDL experience, and how you onboard new drivers. A written hiring policy you actually follow helps your submission.
Your safety record
Your FMCSA inspection history and crash record are public, and underwriters review them. We look at your record with you before we go to market, so we can explain the story behind the numbers.
Keeping schedules accurate
When you add or remove a truck, trailer, or driver, the policy needs to know. An outdated unit or driver schedule can cause a coverage problem at claim time or a surprise at audit. We process changes with the carrier and keep your certificates current.
Contract requirements
Brokers, shippers, and lenders each have their own requirements for limits, additional insureds, waivers of subrogation, and loss payees. We review your agreements so your policy matches what you signed.
How TRS works with fleets
- Review. We go over your current policies, unit and driver schedules, contracts, and loss runs.
- Market. We present one complete submission to multiple A-rated carriers that write fleet trucking.
- Compare. You get side-by-side options with the differences in coverage explained, not just the price.
- Service. Certificates, unit and driver changes, filings, and a review well ahead of every renewal.
Small fleet insurance FAQ
When should we start our renewal?
Earlier is better. Fleet submissions take time to prepare and underwrite, and starting early gives you room to compare options. Send current dec pages, schedules, and three years of loss runs as soon as you can.
Can we insure all of our trucks on one policy?
Fleets usually schedule all power units and trailers on one commercial auto policy, with cargo and other coverages on related policies. The exact structure depends on the carriers quoting and your operation.
Do we need workers’ compensation for our drivers?
Workers’ compensation rules are set by each state and depend on whether your drivers are employees or independent contractors. We review the states you operate in and how your drivers are classified before recommending coverage.
